Top End (Darwin and Kakadu)
Darwin is the northern port of Australia and the administrative capital of the
Northern Territory. This is the land of deserts and grasslands with a very small population;
there is only a few small towns situated far from one another. If you look at the map of
Australia, this region is located on the top, and it is also the most remote from the big
cities, that is why it has its name "The Top End".
Darwin suffered from severe bombings during World War 2, and in 1974 was practically destroyed by the cyclone Tracey, that is why it is now a modern city, mostly built in the 70s. It became one of the major tourist areas of Australia because of the unique National Parks near by.
The most famous natural sanctuary listed in the UNESCO Book of the World Nature Heritage is Kakadu National Park. This is the place where you can experience the unique Australian Safari – searching, taking photos and watching the wild birds and animals in the natural habitat. Kakadu National Park is a genuine piece of untouched nature, and it is under the authority of the Aboriginal tribes. This is the land of bright red colour, stunning waterfalls, eucalyptus bush, plenty of crocodiles, water buffalos, dancing blue brolgas (Australian crane), pelicans and stocks, dingos and wallabies hopping along. At night you will see an unforgettable sunset: glittering red sun setting over an orange desert. This is the land of Dandy the Crocodile, the movie was shot there!
Safari is seasonable, you can see birds and animals from the end of May till September during the "dry season". During the "wet season" the nature awakens from its summer dreaming and goes bright green, the waterfalls are full and spectacular, but many places can be flooded, that is why the journey at this time can be limited.
