Tasmania
Tasmania is a big island at the southern coast of Australia with an area of about 68 sq km. It was discovered by the Dutch explorer Abel Tasman in 1642, and in the middle of the 19th century it used to be the harshest penal settlement in Australia under the British rule. Tasmania is a true emerald in the "Australian Crown", its most green and ecologically clean state. There is much history everywhere, and the whole atmosphere of the island is that of the historic era of the past. Tasmania produces the scallops, salmon and oysters. Nature is the focus of the Tasmanian tourism. You will visit ancient rainforests of the moderate climatic zone with ferns and mosses under the cover of the fog; go fishing to the mountain lake full of salmon and trout; swim in the blue and clear waters of the ocean bays; enjoy the stunning views of the white sandy beaches. Tasmania is also one of the centres for temperate diving.
Hobart is the capital of Tasmania and its biggest city. It is one of the oldest Australian cities, situated in the delta of the Derwent River, at the bottom of Mount Wellington. The most visited place is Salamanca with its cafes, shops and old cottages, where local markets open on Saturdays. The first legal casino in Australia is also located near by.
Launceston is the biggest town of northern Tasmania, famous for its beautifully preserved colonial architecture. Its main attraction is Cataract Gorge with the outlook of the city on top.
