Red Centre
Alice Springs is the largest town within 1000 sq km, situated right in the middle of
the continent. This area is known as the Red Centre after the colour of the ground, because
the Australian desert has specific bright red colour.
Alice Springs was founded in 1871 as a telegraph station between the northern and the
southern points of Australia, and now it became a popular tourist centre. There is much to
see here: camels (they were helping to build the telegraph line in the 19th century),
unusual lizards covered with horns, exotic flowers and unique plants of the desert. The
climate of this area is continental, that is why the gap between the day and night
temperature is quite big.
The most popular tourist area is ULURU.
Uluru (the English name is Ayers Rock)
is the most ancient and big monolith rock on Earth, which is considered by the Aboriginal
people to be one of their sacred sites. It is an astonishing view: a giant rock right in the
middle of the flat red desert, changing its colours with the sunlight from light pink at
dawn to dark burning red at the sunset. The tourists can climb the mountain or just take a
walk along the beautiful path at the bottom, and you are guaranteed to see the unusual
animals and birds of the Australian desert.
